Course Guide

Highlands Links was carefully crafted by legendary architect Stanley Thompson to work with the natural landscape, not against it.

The result is one of Canada’s most celebrated golf experiences, where every hole feels unique, memorable, and deeply connected to the Cape Breton Highlands.

Each hole carries its own distinctive name, all rooted in Scottish and local folklore, reflecting the heritage and personality of the course.

Explore the course hole by hole and discover why so many consider this Thompson’s finest work.

Overhead guide for hole 1, Ben Franey

    Hole #1

    Ben Franey

Named after the vista from the fairway presenting a full view of Franey Mountain, which you’ll be standing at the base of after the first nine holes. This first hole is a steady opening climb that immediately introduces the scale of Highlands Links. The uphill fairway plays longer than the card, with a generous landing area that narrows toward an elevated green. Favour position off the tee, as approaches from the wrong angle will contend with both slope and added distance.

    Playing Tip

Two well-hit shots are required to reach the green on this uphill par four. Dense forest left and right claims many balls. Five is not a bad score here.

    A Proper Highlands Finish

Every great round deserves a proper finish.

Inspired by Hame Noo, the closing hole at Highlands Links, our signature post-round tradition invites you to celebrate a round well played with a fresh oyster, local Glen Breton whisky, or a well-earned drink overlooking the course.
